About this program
This inaugural HBCU Aging Conference, “Decolonizing Aging Research & Practice: Building an Ethical, Impactful, and Inclusive Future,” is dedicated to advancing the integration of diverse and Indigenous knowledge within the field of aging. It will focus on identifying, validating, and amplifying the experiences of aging scholars across various disciplines and community- and institutional settings, in the ongoing discourse on strategies to provide a platform ensuring that there remains a diverse perspective in who, what, when, where, and how aging research is conducted, interpreted, and disseminated.
This workshop aims to critically examine and transform current aging research and practice methodologies through a decolonial lens that highlights ongoing harm on aging minoritized communities. It will focus on strategies for ethical, impactful, and inclusive research and practice that honor diverse aging experiences. Participants will explore the historical and contemporary influences on aging while identifying areas for improvement in existing frameworks. Through interactive sessions, keynotes, and collaborative activities, attendees will not only gain a deeper understanding of decolonial approaches to aging, but also practical tools to apply in their own work. This workshop is a must-attend for researchers, practitioners, community advocates, and policymakers dedicated to advancing justice and inclusivity in the field of aging research and practice.
